Saving money on your college computer!

Posted by Tony under College Savings, Computer, Personal Finance

So you want to build a computer eh?

ComputerWell, I recently started to see whether it might be cheaper to build a computer as oppose to buying one retail for myself.. Guess what I found out? For the most part, it is less inexpensive to build your own computer than it is to buy one at retail value.

Here is my list of what I would consider a high quality computer essentials and their cost for myself:

1. Motherboard w/ Intel Core Duo Process and/ 1gb Ram = $150.00

2. A Case for that nice brain you just bought. A nice case = $50.00

3. A Hard drive thats out of the world! 200GB 7200 RPMS = $60.00-70.00

4. Video Card — a 512mb video card Gforce =$55.00

5. Sound Car - a pretty good one =$40-50.00

6. Network Interface Card (Ethernet (Internet) Connection) =$13.00

7. Keyboard =$15.00

8. Mouse simple/wireless =$5<mouse<40

9. LCD Monitor (ebay, craigslist, pricewatch) =$ 100-150.00

Thats about it! And then you put em’ together but would have to have the Operating System which would actually cost me like 12 bucks as a student and the Anti-Virus is free for me as a student so….. That makes the total cost of my school/game computer approximately 500 bucks give or take? Thats pretty good! And thats a way way way better deal than what they have at walmart! Mine would be faster, better, and stronger for longer period of time! “=D

Anyone out there build a computer before, please add your thoughts!

Respectfully,

Tony Tovar

Just had to say I really enjoy your blog. Simple, yet effective writing about complicated material. You have knack for economics.

The college computer idea is great! There are plenty of tutorials on the net. I’ve rebuilt several PC’s. The only downside to the self built PC is the lack of customer support and rare event of hardware incompatibility. And in the end, so many people are just comfortable with a Windows or Mac machine that they can pick up at the local Best Buy. It’s America and ingenuity seems to be going out of style for so many people, young and old.

I agree with you completely Mag22. Indeed, the days of ingenuity seem to have vanished, sorta; Not just because of convenience alone, but you can see how much the numbers show the US to be a consumer driving monster now more than ever. :D Thanks for you comment!

Nice article. One point that I’d like to add about building your own PC is that if you built it, you’ll know how to fix it too! Saves you more money and headache in the long run. Visit http://www.ambiedeals.com for some deals on computer parts too!
